Winning starts with your seat: The power of timing

If you want to win, you can’t be behind.

Now, I know what you’re thinking –
"Duh, Wendy, that applies to any competition
." But I’m not just talking about the scoreboard. I’m talking about timing.

What happens when you’re behind?

When you’re behind your horse, things just go from bad to worse. Picture this: You’re running full speed into the first barrel. But instead of being up in your seat – balanced, engaged and ready – you’re a split second behind. Now you’re late with your cues or off balance and your horse is quicker to turn. You’re no longer the driver; you’re reacting, and by then, it’s too late. Sound familiar?

You can’t be behind vertical in the run.

Rider alignment

Instead, let’s start by bringing your body just a little bit forward, making sure your ear, shoulder and hip are in alignment. In this position, with your horse approaching first, you would be able to handle it better. You would be in control.

What if you’re on the trail, jumping logs? Would you and your horse be able to jump better?

Yes.

What if you’re roping a steer? Could you get to your steer faster and have your loop be in the best dynamics it can be?

Yes.

Proper rider alignment applies to any situation. And, building those core muscles daily is the best place to start.

A good saddle

Just like a track athlete wouldn’t run without quality shoes, we shouldn’t expect our horse or ourselves to perform at our best without the right saddle. If you need help choosing a saddle that is right for YOU, I’d be happy to help. Check out my calendar for saddle fitting clinics near you or book a virtual appointment.

Don’t get behind, stay ahead.
