The Dennis Lane Card Fitting System Overview

  • Product: A Set of specialized fitting cards.
  • Price: $400.00 (Includes shipping within the US). Shipping is not included for international orders.
  • Allow 4-5 weeks before your cards will arrive.
  • Price includes a tutorial of how to use the cards, including videos, pictures and a question and answer opportunity if you are a subscriber to Winn Horses.
  • Sole U.S. Distributor: Winn Horses, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Dennis Lane's ongoing work.

Components:

  • Rock Cards (2): Used to capture the rock/curve profile of the horse's back. these cards feature four different types of rock profiles written on them for comparison.
  • Wither-Shoulder Measurement Cards (3): Used specifically for measuring the angles and width of the wither and shoulder area. Marked with A
  • B-Card (3) cards (Focus of this SOP): Used to measure the mid-back end and, critically, to establish the correct location for tracing the rock card measurement line. Marked with B.
  • C-Cards (3): Used to measure the posterior end of the back, generally near the 14th to 17th rib. Marked with C.
  • Girth Groove Marking: An 'X' is marked on the horse's girth groove to assist in determining the optimal rigging placement for the saddle.
  • Each card has a "S" for single back and "D" for double back. This is an aid to decide how the horse is shaped.

B-Card Protocol: Mid-Back Measurement and Rock Card Alignement

The B-Card is the pivotal component for establishing the horse's crucial mid-back measurement and correctly positioning the Rock Cards.

Step 1: Locating the Mid-Back Reference Point

  • Identify the 9-12 thoracic vertebra (T). This is typically located where the low spot of the horse is in the back.
  • Place the B card in the mid section or low spot of the back .

Step 2: Measuring and Tracing the B-Card Profile

  • Gently contour the pliable B-Card material to match the exact shape and angle of the horse's back at this point.
  • Using a pencil or marker, trace the horse's back profile onto the B-Card.
  • Crucial Action: The B-Card measurement is used as a reference point for longitudinal alignment. You will draw a horizontal line (the Rock Card Measurement Line) across the B-Card profile to define the precise point where the Rock Card tracing should begin. This ensures consistency and accurate placement of the Rock Card for subsequent steps.

Step 3: Aligning the Rock Card using the B-Card

  • With the B-Card profile complete and the Rock Card Measurement Line established, the Rock Card is then placed along the horse's back, starting at the established B-Card location.
  • The goal is to align the Rock Card so that its starting point matches the B-Card's measurement line, ensuring the rock profile is measured from the correct anatomical starting point forward or backward.
